Meanwhile, in Brooklyn,
Jack and Molly Herman were raising their family: Eddie, Normie, Harriet
and Rita. (Another son, Philip, died in infancy.) Having graduated from
high school in 1942, Eddie joined the Army and fought with an infantry
unit in Europe and Africa.
Milly graduated from Abraham
Lincoln High School in 1944, and went to work for George Jensen, an
upscale department store on Fifth Avenue at 53rd Street. In 1946, she
moved to another Manhattan firm, Mem Co., where she did office work,
statistics, billing and book keeping. During and after the war, Yetta
worked as a stonesetter for a company that manufactured costume jewelry.
Eddie and Milly met on
New Years Eve 1948, on a blind date. (They went to the movies and saw
The Red Shoes.) They got engaged the following year.
